Instructions to authors

MISSION OF CADERNOS CEDES AND EDITORIAL POLICY

Cadernos Cedes’ main objective is to disseminate knowledge produced in the field of Education, and it is directed primarily towards teachers and professionals in practice and training, who work in various working contexts and in different levels and teaching modalities. The Cadernos Cedes are directed to this audience, proposing to encourage debates on educational policies and practices, in order to contribute to educators' continued updating.

The Cadernos Cedes have been published since 1980 and maintain a quarterly publication of three thematic issues per year, enabling open access to all their content since its availability online in 1997.

The Cadernos Cedes support the Open Science policy, which advocates the transparency of processes, reiterates research ethics, adopts the preprint publication system, suggests openness in peer review and recommends sharing methods, data and computer programs.

Each thematic issue of Cadernos Cedes will consist of the following sections:

Presentation: argumentative text whose title should reflect the content of the proposal;

Articles: original and unpublished texts aligned with the proposal's theme.

At the end of each year, the Nominata section will be published, with the list of ad hoc referees who worked on the evaluation of the thematic numbers published.

STEP 1:
SUBMISSION OF PROPOSALS

The submission of thematic issue proposals to the Editorial Committee can take place in three ways:

  1. by spontaneous demand;
  2. by invitation;
  3. by open call.

All proposals must comply with the Instructions to Authors and must be sent to the following e-mail address: revistas.cedes@linceu.com.br

Proposals must contain 10 to 12 articles that express the field's theoretical and methodological diversity, covering different institutions and regions of the country, and necessarily include at least two articles by authors affiliated to the institution abroad.

A proposal submitted to the Editorial Committee of Cadernos Cedes must contain:

Argumentative presentation, including references, and not just a summary of each article that makes up the proposal;

Expanded summary of each article, with bibliographic references (300 to 500 words, not counting the references) and three to five keywords per article;

Abbreviated curriculum of the authors (100 to 200 words), presenting their institutional links and the Curriculum Lattes link or similar.

An article that is part of a proposal cannot be submitted simultaneously to another journal. If any article is published in preprint, all information must be included in the Open Science Compliance Form.

STEP 2:
SUBMISSION OF THEMATIC NUMBERS AND ORIGINAL TEXTS

The proposal approved by the Editorial Committee must be submitted with the complete texts within 90 days, counting from the date of communication of approval.

Number of characters with space:
Thematic number: 380,000 in total, including Presentation.
Presentation: between 10,000 and 20,000
Articles: between 28,000 and 35,000

The submission process of texts occurs through the online system OJS, Open Journal System (SciELO), as support for electronic management and publication of scientific journals.

The approved thematic number must be sent by the organizer (after its registration in the system), in its complete form, with the Presentation and Articles in the order of publication.

A specific link to the approved proposal will be made available to the thematic number organizer, responsible for guiding authors to submit their articles in the system, including co-authors' names, with their contributions and other metadata.

Authors should complete and attach the Open Science Compliance Form, in which they report on the status of the manuscript (in preprint or not, on which server), on the availability of the data and the opening in the peer review.

Access to the registration system

After registering, the author will be able to submit his work

Articles must be unpublished and may be written in Portuguese, Spanish, French and English. The texts in English and French must be submitted already revised in their original language. After their approval, the texts must be necessarily translated into Portuguese by the authors or organizers. Spanish articles will be published in the original language. English and French texts will also be made available in the original language.

The Cadernos Cedes do not consider the following uses of a work as a previous publication: preprinted manuscripts; theses and dissertations made available at university repositories.

When inserting articles in the system, authors must sign and insert the Term of Originality. Authors will be asked for a Declaration of Ethical Commitment assumed in relation to the empirical research presented.

Cadernos Cedes are based on the principles of SciELO's Codes of Ethics, present in the "Guide to Good Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publication"; in the "Principles of Transparency and Best Practices in Academic Publications" recommended by the Committee on Publication Ethics [COPE]; the principles of the Directory of Open Access Journals [DOAJ]; and the principles of the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association [OASPA].

For research in a virtual environment, reference is made to the CONEP document – National Commission for Research Ethics. For researchers abroad, consult an equivalent document or contact the editorial secretary.

The journal uses similarity detection tools that integrate the text analysis and evaluation process. The entire content of each thematic issue is assessed for similarity using the Similarity Check system.

A review by the author will be requested in cases where an unjustified degree of similarity is identified. If improper conduct is identified, such as plagiarism or falsification of data, the author (s) are liable to editorial sanctions.

Research sources and/or funding agencies must be informed, with the respective process numbers, which will appear in a footnote when the article is published.

The proposal organizer has the following functions:

  • define the order of the texts;
  • take care of the volume of characters in the set and compliance with the rules for the presentation of texts;
  • write the Presentation;
  • supervise the submission work of the invited authors;
  • monitor the possible process of reformulating the articles with the authors;
  • ensure delivery of the revised texts within the stipulated period.

STEP 3
THE EVALUATION PROCESS

A proposal approved by the Editorial Committee is accompanied by two of its members - section editors - during the entire editorial production process.

A thematic issue is analyzed as a whole, taking into account its relevance, originality and contribution to the field of education; furthermore, each article that makes up an issue will be analyzed in its articulation and pertinence to the set of texts, its theoretical and methodological consistency, analytical rigor, timeliness, quality of the text and adaptation to the editorial scope.

With the complete texts, each proposed issue is sent to the appreciation of at least two referees from the Editorial Board or ad hoc specialists who discuss the consistency of the proposal and the pertinence of its acceptance - both of the complete number and each separate article.

S ocial markers of difference, such as gender, sexual  orientat ion,  race, religious belief, nationality, political position of the authors, among others, will not be considered in the evaluation of articles.

 Traditionally, the Cadernos have adopted the double-blind system. The names of referees remain confidential, and the authors' names are also omitted from them. However, considering the Open Science policy, the authors may choose to reveal their names to the evaluators. In turn, all ad hoc reviewers will have the option of being identified by the authors.

The organizers of thematic issues will have the option of indicating possible ad hoc reviewers for consideration by the Committee. The Editorial Committee may choose to publish the opinions anonymously or giving credit to the reviewers who have authorized their identification.

The texts will be made available entirely in electronic format on the Scientific Electronic Library On-Line (SciELO) site.

After final approval of the Editorial Committee's articles, publication in Cadernos Cedes will require a finantial contribution to the editorial production according to guidelines presented on the page of the Centro de Estudos Educação e Sociedade-CEDES. This contribution aims to ensure the sustainability of the open-access journal maintained and edited by a non-profit association. Guidelines and letter are available at this link.

The Cadernos Cedes declare that the concepts and positions issued in the published texts are the sole responsibility of the authors, not necessarily reflecting the opinion of the Editorial Board of this journal.

The guidelines must be strictly followed by the proponents and authors of the thematic issue, as failure to comply may result in the proposal being refused.
