Instructions to authors

Scope and Policy

Brazilian Journal of Occupational Therapy emphasizes on studies about physical, sensory, mental, psychological and/or social problems related to daily life and human do, articulated to the participation, autonomy and inclusion of subjects (individual and collective).

The journal’s mission is to publish original works that contribute to the debate on topics of common interest to the field of Occupational Therapy and correlated research from the fields of Health, Education, Culture and Social Science and Occupational Science.

Articles submitted for publication must be consistent with the journal's mission and should be written in Portuguese, English or Spanish by national or international researchers, academics, students and practitioners in the fields of Occupational Therapy and related areas.

Even though the majority of submissions tend to come from research conducted in different regions of Brazil, all articles are subjected to a strict international standards-based peer review process that also seeks to make accepted works suitable both for national and international dissemination and interest.

Brazilian Journal of Occupational Therapy follows the principles of ethics in scientific publications that are contained in the code of conduct of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the Code of Ethics American Educational Research Association, the Good Scientific Practices Code – FAPESP and the Council of Science Editors - CSE related to publication.

To promote the research integrity, the strengthening and transparency in the process, all the material published is in accordance with the Guide to Good Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publication and the Open Science Compliance Form.

Peer Review Process

A double-blind peer review process is adopted. The texts are submitted online and, if they are in accordance with the publication rules, they are sent to one of the Section Editors for an initial evaluation.

At this stage, the relevance of submission to the journal's scope are valued and the relevance and originality of the topic and the adequacy and density of the theoretical-methodological approach used is highlighted, among other formal aspects considered. Only texts approved at this stage will be forwarded to the next stages of merit evaluation. Texts not approved at this stage will be sent by the Section Editors to the Editor-in-Chief for finalization of the process.

If the text is approved in the initial evaluation by the Section Editor, he will indicate two ad hoc reviewers, according to the research topic, who shall issue an opinion with the analysis of the text and with the indication of review, accepted or not for publication, within 30 days, according to criteria of content relevance, argumentative consistency, theoretical and methodological coherence, structural adequacy and contributions to the advancement of knowledge in the area.

Texts entering into peer review after the review process will be forwarded to the authors with the editorial decision, indicating required reviews and/or final decision to accept and/or refuse. In the case of required reviews, the texts will be returned to the authors for adequacy and a new round of evaluation will be requested from Section Editors and/or ad hoc reviewers.

The Chief Editors are responsible for communicating with Section Editors and with reviewers when necessary. The final decision on each text submitted to the journal is up to them.

Once the analysis stage has been completed by the ad hoc reviewers and Section Editors, the Editor-in-Chief will issue the final opinion (in which the anonymity of the reviewers is preserved) and it will be expressed as follows:

a) Accepted for Publication: The work is accepted integrally for publication in one of the next issues of the journal, according to the chronological criterion of the conclusion of the analysis process.

b) Requested Reviews: The modifications must be made by the author, who will receive the opinion with the recommendations, returning the work within the stipulated period and with the changes made highlighted in a different color for the conference. In the case of a large number of requested changes, the article will be forwarded to Section Editors and/or ad hoc reviewers, after adapted by the author, for a new analysis, and it may be accepted or rejected.

c) Refused: Refusal of publication with the due justification given by the Editor-in-Chief, considering the analysis of each of the ad hoc reviewers, given to the authors, preserving the identity of the reviewers.

All opinions will be known to the authors, ad hoc reviewers, and Section Editors.

If the author disagrees with the opinion received, he may request a review from the journal's editor. If the editor evaluates the review as appropriate, he will forward the request to the same reviewers and section editors, or to the ad-hoc, depending on the case.

The jornal follows ethical procedures throughout its publishing process, from submission to the review of papers, and deviation from acceptable academic conduct is not tolerated, whether on the part of the Editorial Board or Authors. As from later 2016 the journal adopted the CrossCheck system to actively look for plagiarized or uncited content in submitted articles.

All the Authors, Editors, and Referees are encouraged to learn and follow the guidelines provided by the Committee on Publication Ethics - (COPE) in all the stages of the publishing process.

Studies involving experiments with humans or animals must be approved by an Institutional Research Ethics Committee.

Clinical trials must register in the Brazilian Registry of Clinical Trials - REBEC or other with the same goal.

The journal adopts the system IThenticate to see evidence of plagiarism in the submitted texts.
Suspicions of misconduct of any kind and at any level or stage should be reported by e-mail directly to the Editor-in-Chief.

All cases involving suspected misconduct will rigorously be investigated by the periodical to clarify any doubts. In this sense, there is a commitment to the publication of corrections, clarifications, retractions, as well as notes of concern, if needed.

When submitting papers for review, Authors should:

  • Observe criteria used to assign authorship for only the researchers involved in the study, not naming as coauthors those who did not actually participate in the study;
  • Cite and correctly reference all data and interpretations of data from other publications;
  • Report any conflict of interest for all authors;
  • Report all financial sources;
  • Submit to review only unpublished papers that are not simultaneously submitted to other periodicals, ensuring the reliability and authenticity of data;
  • Report retractions or corrections of errors whenever necessary;

When receiving an invitation to review any paper, Referees should be committed to:

  • Refuse the invitation if there is any conflict of interest;
  • Provide a rigorous review;
  • Accept invitations only when capable of completing the review by the deadline;
  • Report any potentially relevant references already published but not cited in the text;
  • Keep strict confidentiality in regard to papers reviewed, not discussing them with colleagues nor using information for the reviewer's own benefit until the paper's publication.

Editors should always:

  • Ensure that the peer review process is based on academic neutrality and impartiality;
  • Ensure the confidentiality of Referees;
  • Assess and investigate all cases in which there is suspicion of misconduct or unethical behavior;
  • Prevent financial interests from compromising ethical standards of publication;
  • Ensure to the best of their ability that there is no plagiarism, fraudulent data or results.

Clinical Trials

Brazilian Journal of Occupational Therapy supports policies for the clinical trials registry from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), acknowledging the importance of these initiatives for the international recording and dissemination of information regarding clinical studies, with open access. Therefore, when addressing clinical research, only papers presenting an identification number in one of the Clinical Trials Registries validated by criteria established by WHO and ICMJE (addresses are available at ICMJE's site will be accepted for publication. The identification number must be presented at the end of the abstract.
