Articles

The articles submitted to the journal must be original and unpublished. Their concomitant submission to another national journal is not allowed;

Submitted articles will be evaluated by the Editors and afterward will undergo a double-blind peer review process by ad hoc reviewers who may accept or reject the article, as well as suggest modifications;

Multiple authorship articles are reviewed based on the assumption that the authors listed agree with its submission and that all co-authors have approved its final version.
Article preparation guidelines
The papers must be sent in MS Word (.doc) or OpenOffice format, in Times New Roman font, size 12. They must have justified text and spacing 1.5 cm. Papers must be formatted to fit an A4 page and margins must be set up to 2.5 cm (top and bottom) and 3 cm (left and right). The texts must not exceed the limit of words of each category of contribution.
1. The articles must have between 4.000 and 10.000 words;
2. The header should include only the title of the article with no reference to its authorship, in observance to the blind peer review evaluation process adopted;
3. Data related to authorship and institution/affiliation (Department, Faculty and University to which the professor/graduate student is associated) must be included on the OJS platform in a specific section called "Authorship/Metadata" and should have up to 120 words;
4. The articles must be followed by:
a) title, including its version in English;
b) an abstract (and its version in English) of up to 120 words where the objetives, methods and conclusions of the text are outlined;
c) keywords (three to five), and its version in English, in which the subject of the article is made clear;
5. All bibliographic references must be indicated in footnotes. Additional references considered indispensable that are not mentioned throughout the text must be included at the end of the manuscript as a section named "Complementary bibliography";
6. Footnotes must be indicated by using arabic numerals in ascending order;
7. Quotations up to three lines must be inserted between quotation marks in the body text. Modifications made in the quotations (such as terms and explanations introduced by the author) must be placed between square brackets;
8. Quotations that exceed three lines must appear without quotation marks in a specific paragraph indented 2 cm from the left and using font size 11. Excerpts omitted from the quotation must be signalized by suspension points between parentheses;
9. Words in a foreign language considering the article's language must be italicized;
10. In the body text, titles of artworks (painting, sculpture, film, videos etc.) must be indicated in italics whereas titles of exhibitions must appear between quotation marks;
11. All bibliographic references, whether indicated in the footnotes or in the complementary bibliography, must be standardized according to ABNT-NBR 6023:
Books:
LASTNAME, Name. Title of the book highlighted in bold. Edition. City: Publishing House, year.
Book chapters:
LASTNAME, Name. Title of the chapter. In: LASTNAME, Name (specify the name of the organizer of the book; if the organizer is also the author of the chapter, the name should be replaced by ___.). Title of the book highlighted in bold. City: Publishing House, year, p. 0-0.
Article from a periodical:
LASTNAME, Name. Title of the article. Title of the periodical highlighted in bold, Publishing city, v., n., p. 0-0, month (abbreviated). year.
Theses and dissertations:
LASTNAME, Name. Title of theses/dissertation highlighted in bold: title complement without highlight in bold. Year. V. Theses/Dissertation (PhD/ Master in Field X) – Faculty X, University X, City, p. 0-0.
Electronic media:
LASTNAME, Name. Title of the article. Title of the periodical highlighted in bold. City: Publishing House, vol., fascicle, p. 0-0, month, year. From: <http://www - complete URL from the document>. Retrieved: day month (abbreviated) year.
Movies:
Title of the movie highlighted in bold (release year), Director, Country of production.
- Image Formatting Specifications
1. ARS is not held responsible for obtaining copyright of images;
2. The authors are responsible for providing any images they wish to include in their texts;
3. The authors must provide the captions for the images and indicate where the pictures must be placed by inserting this information in the body text and between parentheses (fig.x). The journal reserves the right not to publish images that do not satisfy the qualities required for its proper printing;
4. The captions of images included throughout the text must follow the specifications below:
Fig. (numerals in ascending order). Author, Title in italics, year. Technique, dimensions in cm, Location (museum, collection etc., if there is any), city (if there is any);
5. The images must be sent in jpeg or tiff format and have 300 dpi (the approximate size should be 17 x 24 cm, but that may vary according to the image);
6. Color pictures can only be sent to the journal's online version. In its printed version images will be converted to grayscale;
7. All the images, following the requirements above, must be attached at OJS platform in a file named "complementary document" and be sent at the time of submission. If you have further questions, please contact: ars@usp.br
Visual essays
The visual essays must arise from consolidated artistic researches and be specially conceived to be published in ARS. They must contain 8 images, preferably in color, with 300 dpi resolution and must be sent in jpeg or tiff format (vertical images: 24 x 18 cm; horizontal images: 24 x 36 cm).
Writings by artists
This section is reserved to publishing experimental writing pieces by both brazilian and foreign artists. The texts should have up to 6.000 words and may be preceded by an introduction no longer than 2.000 words. They must be followed by title; abstract and keywords.
Reviews
The reviews must cover national or foreign journals released in the past 24 months. They should not overcome 2.500 words and must be sent along with a concise title and a complete technical description of the book reviewed. Quotes must be accompanied by the corresponding page number. Save for the instructions above, reviews must follow the other guidelines for the submission of articles and must include abstract, keywords and the title in English.
Interviews
The interviews must follow the question-answer format and should be no longer than 8.000 words. They must contain title; abstract and keywords and follow the other guidelines for the submission of articles.
Translations
Translations will be evaluated according to the relevance and suitability of the original text. They must have up to 9.000 words and follow the other guidelines for the submission of articles. They must be sent along with a licence from the author and the original text.
Peer review process
ARS adopts a double-blind peer review process by ad hoc reviewers in collaboration with renewed research-professors from national and international universities, which assures rigour and transparency to the evaluation criteria. Submitted articles will be evaluated by the Editors and afterward will be sent to the ad hoc reviewers who may accept or reject the article, as well as suggest modifications.
Periodicity
Publication released three times a year (from 2017 onwards).
Open access policy
This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that the free distribution of scientific production grants a broader global exchange of knowledge.
Ethics Principles in Scholarly Publication
ARS (São Paulo) adopts the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the Code of Good Scientific Practice of Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP), and the Guia de boas práticas para o fortalecimento da ética na publicação científica of SciELO as references to implementing best scientific practices in all stages of work, from the submission of articles to its publication.
ARS' Editors declare their commitment to identifying and preventing the publication of articles which present indications of misconduct in research and ethics violation, especially in the case of plagiarism, citation manipulation, data falsification, lack of required authorizations, expression of discriminatory opinions, among others.
Cases such as the ones listed above will be analyzed by the Editors individually. If the misconduct is identified in any article already published by ARS, and if there are sufficient
concrete indications that prove this behavior, the journal will release a retraction note, in which must be cleared stated the reasons for its publication.
