Basic Information

 

Published since 2011, Almanack is a quarterly academic journal that specializes in the history of formation of national states in Brazil and around the world, between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Edited by specialists in the subject, Almanack is managed and supported by researchers from ten Brazilian universities: UNIFESP (institutional headquarter), USP, UFF , UNIRIO , UERJ , UFJF , UFOP , UFES , UFSJ , UFRRJ and PUC -RJ. Almanack is also supported by Sociedade Brasileira de Estudos do Oitocentos (SEO).

The abbreviated title is Almanack, which should be used in bibliographies , footnotes, references and bibliographic strips.

Instructions to authors

 

1. Scope and Editorial Policies

 

ALMANACK is a peer-reviewed scientific journal that publishes articles and reviews on the formation of State and nation in Brazil and the Americas in their interfaces with contemporary and global historical processes, between the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as comparative and theoretical-methodological approaches. It adopts the ethical guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the Code of Ethics American Educational Research Association,  the Code of Good Scientific Practices - FAPESP, and the Council of Science Editors (CSE) regarding publication.

ALMANACK is divided into four sections. The Forum and Dossiers consists of articles previously commissioned by the Editorial Board or by an ad hoc organizer. The Articles (open) and Reviews sections accept contributions on an ongoing basis. Manuscripts can be submitted in Portuguese, English, French, and Spanish. Further instructions for authors are provided below. All manuscripts submitted to ALMANACK go through a pre-selection process in which the relevance of the topic, clarity of writing, and alignment with the journal’s focus are evaluated.

Forums and Dossiers are published with a brief introductory text on the topic, including the title and bibliography, with versions in both Portuguese and English.

The evaluation of manuscripts sent to the Dossier section will be carried out by a committee, designated by the Editorial Board, which involves the organizers, journal advisors and ad hoc reviewers.

ALMANACK adheres to the principles of Open Science and accepts manuscripts that have been previously deposited in a non-commercial preprint server, provided they have not been simultaneously submitted for peer review to another academic journal. The author(s) must inform whether the article has been deposited in a preprint server and must obligatorily provide the corresponding DOI number.

The author(s) are fully responsible for the content of the submitted texts. Authors who submit manuscripts to the journal agree to evaluate at least 1 article within a period of two years. All content published in ALMANACK is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) and no submission fees are charged.

 

 

2. Peer Review Process

 

ALMANACK employs a double-blind peer review system, where two or more reviewers are designated to assess the manuscript. The identities of the reviewers and authors are kept confidential throughout the evaluation process. However, in line with the principles of Open Science, ALMANACK allows authors and reviewers to disclose their identities if they choose to do so. To do this, they must complete the article submission and evaluation forms

All scientific contributions undergo the following review process:

  • Initial Review: At this stage, the Editorial Assistant evaluates whether the manuscripts comply with the rules set out in the Author Guidelines If they do not meet the criteria, the manuscripts are returned to the authors. Articles that do not pass the initial review are sent back to the  authors.
  • Evaluation Process: Manuscripts that pass the initial review are assigned two independent reviewers based on their expertise in the relevant field.
  • Feedback: Reviewers communicate their assessments directly through the journal's OJS system. The decision can be "Accept the article," "Mandatory revisions required," "Resubmit for re-evaluation," or "Reject the submission.". If the decision is to "Resubmit for re-evaluation," the manuscript must revised by the author and resubmitted for a second round of peer review.
  • Approval or Rejection: The Editorial Board, based on the evaluations, decides on the approval or rejection of the manuscript. If accepted, the manuscript proceeds to the editing process for publication.
 

 

3. Ethical Recommendations

 

ALMANACK supports the recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), Code of Good Scientific Practices - FAPESP, Guia de Boas Práticas da Scielo and the Council of Science Editors (CSE) regarding ethical publishing standards.

ALMANACK adopts the Office of Research Integrity’s definition of research misconduct, which includes fabrication, falsification, or plagiarism in the preparation, execution, or review of research or in reporting of research results.

Research misconduct does not include honest mistakes or differences of opinion.

Any cases of misconduct will be treated with the appropriate sanctions established by the Editorial Board.

  • Fabrication Inventing data or results and recording or reporting them in the manuscript.
  • Falsification: Manipulating research materials, equipment, or processes or altering or omitting data or results in a way that the research is not accurately represented in the research record.
  • Plagiarism: Appropriating ideas, processes, results, or words of another person proper credit. 

ALMANACK uses the Turnitin software to detect similarities in submitted material. Manuscripts found to be plagiarized will be rejected, and authors may face sanctions determined by the Editorial Board.

In cases duplicate or redundant publication, corrections, and retractions, ALMANACK follows these recommendations:

  • Duplicate and Redundant Publication: ALMANACK commits to publishing only original material, i.e., material that has not been previously published or is under consideration by other journals, even in different languages. Duplicate publication refers to the practice of submitting the same study to two or more journals, and redundant publication  consists of the inappropriate division of results of one research into more than one article (also known as “salami publication”), which may lead to the rejection of the article or its retraction. Authors may incur sanctions as determined by the ALMANACK Editorial Board
  • Corrections and Retractions: In the case of errors or issues that do not constitute research misconduct, regardless of their nature or origin, they will be corrected through an erratum. Published articles identified with research misconduct will be retracted with an explanation duly referenced.

Regarding Conflict of Interest, ALMANACK requests that authors declare any personal or commercial interests that could bias the text at the time of manuscript submission. If there is no conflict of interest,authors should declare that they have no conflicts of interest.

Sanctions: Practices that undermine scientific integrity, such as plagiarism, duplicate publication, and redundant publications, will be  assessed by the Editorial Board, which will decide on corresponding sanctions, including the prohibition of publishing in the journal for a  specific period. Authors will be promptly informed of all stages of this process.

 

 

4. Guidelines for Submitting Reviews and Dossier Proposals

 

Reviews:

  • Should contain between 1,500 (minimum) and 2,200 (maximum) words.
  • Must have a title different from the title of the work being reviewed.
  • Summarize the central ideas of the work.
  •  Present the methodological perspective and, when applicable, the theoretical premises adopted by the author to develop the central ideas of the book.
  •  Position the work within the academic field it belongs to, mentioning its main authors and critics if possible.
  • Conduct a critical evaluation of the three points mentioned above.
  • Include a bibliography at the end of the text.

Organization of the Dossiers:

ALMANACK  accepts proposals for dossiers that  meet the following editorial guidelines and directions:

  • They may have one or two coordinators. Both should hold a doctorate and be recognized specialists in the dossier's subject matter, preferably from different institutions, with at least one of them being non-Brazilian.
  • Proposals can be submitted in Portuguese, English, Spanish or French.
  • Proposals can include a maximum of 6 original and unpublished articles with the following characteristics:
    1. Dossier title and institutional affiliation of the proposed editors;
    2. Presentation of the proposal (2 to 4 paragraphs);
    3. Authors' names, along with their institutional, titles, and article abstracts;
    4. Indication of a schedule for the submission of the final texts, including the presentation by the coordinators (in Portuguese and English).
    5. It is suggested that 50% of the texts presented in the proposal be in English, in addition to other languages accepted by the journal (Portuguese, Spanish, French).
    6. All texts must be submitted by their respective authors through the journal's website.
    7. The approval of dossiers is the responsibility of our Editorial Board and will be communicated to the proponents/organizers as soon as it occurs.
 

 

5. Manuscript Preparation

 

The manuscript should be submitted in a Microsoft Office Word file, which should contain a maximum of 11,000 words, including title, abstract, keywords, and footnotes, in Times New Roman font, size 12.. The files should not exceed 2MB.

To facilitate the evaluation process, ALMANACK requires that authors submit their manuscripts in separate files as follows :

A file with:

  • Title: The title must be clear and concise. For titles in Portuguese, French and Spanish, it is mandatory to provide the title in English as well.
  • Authorship: Authors should be graduates, except for reviews. They should provide their full name, institutional affiliation (University/Department, City, Country), email, and ORCID – all authors should be registered with ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID). In manuscripts with multiple authors, each author should indicate their respective ORCID.
  • Funding: All sources of research funding should be mentioned. Indicate the institutional contact and project number . The role of funding agencies in conducting the study, analysis, and manuscript writing should be declared in Acknowledgements section.
  • Acknowledgements: Contributors who do not meet the authorship criteria should be included in the acknowledgements section.
  • Abstract: The abstract should briefly present the manuscript, not exceeding 250 words. Quotations should not be included in the abstract. Abstracts in Portuguese, French and Spanish should be accompanied by an English version.
  • Keywords Include three to six keywords separated by commas in the manuscript's language and in English. It is recommended to search for keywords in the controlled vocabulary of SIBI/USP SIBI/USP Controlled Vocabulary

Another file with the text followed by the bibliography cited in footnotes.

Other file(s) for each image or graphic used.

Regarding authorship:

  • Authorship should be removed from Word properties. To do this, open the text in Word, click on the “File” menu, select “Info”. Then click on “Properties, choose “Advanced Properties”, clock on “Summary” and delete the content of the “Author” field. If the author agrees to reveal their identity, this action is not necessary. 
  • In manuscripts with more than 2 authors, it is mandatory to indicate, in the time of submission, that each author participated in the work assuming responsibility for a significant part of the content. ALMANACK recommends that authorship be based on the following criteria::
    1. Substantial contribution to the study’s conception;
    2. Data analysis or interpretation for the work;
    3. Drafting of part of the work or critical review of its intellectual content for the version to be published.

All contributors who do not meet the authorship criteria should be mentioned in the Acknowledgments section, as well as the financial support from funding agencies.

Organization of Articles (Open, Forums, and Dossiers) and Reviews:

Manuscripts should be organized in the following order: text (which may contain tables, graphs, or images), footnotes, and bibliography.

Citation rules: guidelines:

  • ALMANACK employs a system of footnotes for citations. In this system, all references (author, year, page) for books, articles, theses, or similar sources should be indicated as footnotes in a simplified manner. For example: Carvalho, 1980, p. 36. Only at the end, in the bibliography, should the complete references of the works actually cited in the text be provided.
  • The references mentioned in the manuscript should be numbered in Arabic numerals corresponding to the information cited in the footnotes
  • Images: Images, along with their complete captions (including authorship and the holding institution’s reference), should be numbered in Greek letters. They should indicate their position in the body of the text and be submitted as separate files, as a supplementary documents (step 4 of the electronic submission system). Only images in TIFF or JPEG format with a resolution of 300 dpi will be accepted.
  • Graphs, Figures, and Tables: Tables and Figures should be numbered in the order of their appearance in the text. They should include a title and be provided in separate files. They should have an open background and be entirely white.

Citation rules:

Citation Standards For final bibliography citations, you should follow the following pattern: ABNT NBR – 6023.

6. Submission and Proofing:

 

Manuscripts should be submitted through the OJS system on the journal's website: https://periodicos.unifesp.br/index.php/alm/index.

Before the publication of accepted articles, corresponding Authors will receive the referee reports and must adjust the text according to the received suggestions. Afterward, they will send the revised article to the journal, highlighting the changes made in yellow. Once the modifications have been verified, the article will be prepared for publication. Before that, the author will receive the revised text in a PDF file. To open these files, you need to have Adobe Reader installed, which can be downloaded for free at http://get.adobe.com/br/reader/. Corrections or changes that the author requests at this stage should be limited to typographical errors; the content or authorship cannot be altered.
