About the journal

Brief History

The journal "Arquivos de Gastroenterologia," founded in 1964 by Prof. Dr. José Fernando Pontes, was initially published quarterly. Starting in 2024, it will adopt a continuous publication flow system, expediting the publication of already approved papers.

The institution directly responsible for the journal is the Brazilian Institute for Studies and Research in Gastroenterology and Other Specialties (IBEPEGE). The journal is the official publication body for the following entities:

  • Brazilian College of Digestive Surgery (CBCD)
  • Brazilian Society of Digestive Motility and Neurogastroenterology (SBMDN)
  • Brazilian Federation of Gastroenterology (FBG)
  • Brazilian Society of Digestive Endoscopy (SOBED)
  • Brazilian Society of Hepatology (SBH)
  • Brazilian Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (SBNPE)
  • Brazilian Academy of Dysphagia (ABD)
  • Study Group on Inflammatory Bowel Disease of Brazil (GEDIIB)

Committed to stimulating scientific production and valuing medical literature, it aims to publish original scientific papers from national and international researchers.

The abbreviated title of the journal is "Arq. Gastroenterol.," which should be used in bibliographies, footnotes, references, and bibliographic captions.

Compliance with Open Science

Authors must fill out and submit the Open Science Compliance Form with their manuscript. In this form, authors are asked to indicate:

(a) whether the manuscript is a preprint and, if so, its location.

(b) whether data, program codes, and other materials underlying the manuscript text are correctly cited and referenced; and,

(c) whether they accept options for openness in the peer review process.

Open Science Compliance Form.

Ethics in Publication

The "Arquivos de Gastroenterologia" adopts and uses the guidelines and recommendations of the COPE Committee on Publication Ethics.

Research articles involving human beings must indicate, in the Methods section, their express agreement with ethical standards and with the participants' due free and informed consent. Research with humans must include the approval number from the Research Ethics Committee. Brazilian studies must comply with Resolution 466/2012 of the National Health Council of the Ministry of Health (Brazil), which deals with the Code of Ethics for Research on Human Beings. For studies outside Brazil, they must comply with the Helsinki Declaration.

Studies involving animals must explicitly agree with international ethical principles (e.g., Committee for Research and Ethical Issues of the International Association for the Study of Pain, published in PAIN, 16:109-110, 1983) and national instructions (Laws 6638/79, 9605/98, Decree 24665/34) regulating research with animals and include the approval number from the Animal Research Ethics Committee.

The journal "Arquivos de Gastroenterologia" supports the policies for clinical trial registration of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), recognizing the importance of these initiatives for the registration and international dissemination of information about clinical studies, in open access. Approval by an appropriate Ethics Committee is an indispensable requirement for any research involving human beings or any human material. Authors must include in the manuscript the name of the ethics committee responsible for the approval, along with the project's reference number. Additionally, all authors must strictly adhere to the requirements set by the ICMJE (International Committee of Medical Journal Editors).

Therefore, only clinical research articles that have received an identification number in one of the Clinical Trials Registries validated by the criteria established by the WHO and ICMJE, whose addresses are available on the ICMJE website, will be accepted for publication. The identification number must be registered in "Methods".

To ensure that the study complies with good practice standards, it is recommended to use the checklist below. Other guides are listed at https://www.equator-network.org/.

a. CONSORT for randomized trials;

b. STARD for diagnostic studies;

c. PRISMA for systematic reviews and meta-analyses;

d. ARRIVE for pre-clinical studies in animals.

Editorial Policy

Preprints

The use of "preprints" is an option and choice of the authors, and the journal accepts the submission of manuscripts previously deposited on the SciELO Preprints server.

Peer Review Process

The evaluation of the work is conducted impartially and anonymously, meaning the authors' identities are concealed from the reviewers. In the case of Preprints, it is impossible to guarantee the authors' anonymity; therefore, the evaluation may be single-blind or open. An Associate Editor will be assigned to each article, who will select reviewers, oversee the review process, and approve the final text. The name of this Editor will be published alongside the work. At least two reviewers evaluate original articles (double-blind peer review). The estimated time for the process is 90 days from submission. The decision on acceptance for publication is made by the Editorial Board.

Open Data

As a good practice, following Open Science to ensure security and transparency, the Arquivos de Gastroenterologia encourage the "sharing of data, codes, methods, and other materials used and resulting from research that generally underlies the texts of articles published by journals."

The research data from manuscripts approved for publication may, as of 2024, be stored in the SciELO Data repository (in progress).

It is recommended to store observed, collected, or generated data to validate the results of the original research, whether raw data, processed data, audio, video, code, software, algorithms, protocols, and methods.

Fee Charging

No fees are required from authors for submission or article evaluation.

The application of article processing charges (APCs) is reserved for after the final text of the article is approved, with the Editorial Committee reserving the right to waive fees based on the authors' origins or lack of funding in response to the authors' request. The fees are published on the website https://revistaarquivosdegastro.com.br.

The Arquivos de Gastroenterologia are available online with open and free access. It is unnecessary to request permission from the journal for electronic copying if appropriate credit is given to the source.

Ethics and Misconduct Policy, Errata, and Retraction

  • The Arquivos de Gastroenterologia adopts the publication ethics principles included in the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) code of conduct. The Editorial Body will assess and address ethical issues and/or issues that may harm the journal's reputation.
  • In cases of misconduct, the journal will apply the retraction policy per the Best Practice Guide proposed by SciELO.
  • The Registration and Publication of Errata will follow the recommendations proposed by SciELO.
  • The Registration and publication of Retraction will be as proposed by SciELO.

Policy on Conflict of Interest

  • Conflicts of interest may be of a personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial nature. Conflicts of interest may occur when authors, reviewers, or editors have interests that could influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts.
  • Authors, reviewers, and editors involved in the evaluation and processing of the article must disclose a summary statement of interest on the title page file. If there is no interest to declare, then it should be mentioned: "Declarations of interest: none." This statement will ultimately be published if the article is accepted.
  • Reviewers and editors involved in the process must disclose in a statement whether there is any conflict of interest involved in the evaluation and processing of the article. If there is a conflict of interest, even potential, it must be reported in a separate signed document attached to the processing process. This information will be published if the article is approved.
  • All authors, reviewers, and editors involved in the evaluation and processing of the article must disclose any financial and personal relationships with other people or organizations that could inappropriately influence (bias) their work. Potential competing interests include employment, consultancy, stock ownership, honoraria, paid expert testimony, patent applications/registrations, and grants or other funding.
  • When editors have conflicts of interest, they should delegate decision-making to other editors.
  • For more information, see Disclosure of Financial and Non-Financial Relationships and Activities, and Conflicts of Interest.

Adoption of Similarity Verification Software

The Arquivos de Gastroenterologia adopts professional tools for similarity detection (Grammarly, Plagius, or similar). At the authors' discretion, certifications offered by anti-plagiarism software may be used.

Regarding the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Manuscript Preparation

Artificial intelligence (AI) or similar technologies do not qualify for authorship. The author must carefully supervise the use of AI to assist in writing texts and formatting. Any AI tool cannot be included as a co-author. They must be described if used to create content or assist in writing or editing. If they are part of the design or formal research methods, they should be included in the Methods section.

Sex and Gender Issues

The editorial team of the Arquivos de Gastroenterologia, as well as the authors who publish in the journal, must always observe the guidelines on Sex and Gender Equity in Research – SAGER). The SAGER guidelines comprise a set of guidelines that guide the reporting of sex and gender information in study design, data analysis, and the results and interpretation of findings. Instructions for Authors

The Arquivos de Gastroenterologia now promote and progressively require adherence to good practices of open science communication in the policies, management, and editorial operation of journals guided by SciELO. This includes the adoption of open science practices in four dimensions of scientific communication to ensure that the quality journals it indexes follow the state of the art in scientific communication.

Types of Articles

The Arquivos publish original and unpublished contributions (from national and international researchers) that are compatible with the journal's objectives and meet scientific and editorial standards.

The manuscript submission implies that the work in its entirety or in part has not been published in another source or communication medium and that it is not under review in another journal for publication.

The journal's objective is to publish studies of an original nature, clinical or surgical techniques, and epidemiological studies in the areas of Endoscopy, Surgery, Hepatology, Digestive Motility, Clinical Gastroenterology, Experimental Surgery, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Pediatric Gastroenterology, Clinical Pathology of Gastroenterology, and finally, Nutrition.

In addition, it publishes Editorials, Letters to the Editor, Consensus, Brief Communications, Systematic Review Articles, and E-Videos.

The evaluation of the work is done impartially and anonymously, meaning any identification of the article's origin is concealed from the reviewers. At least two reviewers evaluate original articles (double-blind peer review). The estimated time for the process is 90 days from submission. The decision on acceptance for publication is made by the Editorial Board.

Author Contributions

The authors must submit a statement file from each author describing their contributions to the article using the relevant roles from CRediT: Conceptualization; Data Curation; Formal Analysis; Funding Acquisition; Investigation; Methodology; Project Administration; Resources; Software; Supervision; Validation; Visualization; Writing - Original Draft Preparation; Writing - Review & Editing.

The authorship statements should be formatted with the authors' names first followed by the CRediT roles.
