About the journal

 

Brief History

 

Anais Brasileiros de Dermatologia (Brazilian Annals of Dermatology) is the official scientific publication of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD - Sociedade Brasileira de Dermatologia), published uninterruptedly since 1925.

It is a bimonthly, peer-reviewed, open-access publication, printed in Portuguese and online in English, devoted to the dissemination of studies, evidence, and technical-scientific reports that are original and unpublished, results from research, reviews or communications about Dermatology and related fields. The journal focuses on Tropical Dermatology, Parasitic, and Infectious Dermatology, STDs/AIDS, and Dermopathology.

 

 

Open Science Compliance

 

Anais Brasileiros de Dermatologia (ABD) is open access. The Open Science movement proposes guidelines for collaborative, shared, and public scientific practice. In line with the Open Science guidelines, ABD adopts a series of practices, such as the open access policy, the code of good practice for editors, and the use of social networks to disseminate published works.

The ABD journal requests a precise indication of the role played by each author in articles with multiple authorships. It also encourages sharing analysis data sets, instruments, statistical analysis scripts, scripts, and additional materials. 

ABD motivates the publication of preprint articles and recommends the public platforms Preprints, SciELO Preprints, and EmeRI for open discussion before approval and publication in the journal.

 

 

Ethics in Publishing

 

The ABD journal adopts the principles of publication ethics included in the code of conduct of the Committee on Publication Ethics COPE. 

Allegations of misconduct before and after publication are directed to the journal and the editor-in-chief and may result in the removal of the author, and a request for retraction due to ethical misconduct, among others.

The journal requires the authors to mention each person’s contribution on the title page based on the authorship declaration by the Contributor Roles Taxonomy (CRediT). 

Complaints and appeals must be sent to the journal, editor-in-chief, or technical team located at the scientific society responsible for publishing the ABD.

The article must present conflicts of interest of each of the authors. The absence of an indication may involve resources and the need for retraction by those involved.

Data and reproducibility: ABD encourages the use of reporting and registration guidelines for clinical and other trials and publication and availability of raw data from research published in the journal.

Clinical trials must be registered in a public database (options are on the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors website). Examples are the Brazilian Clinical Trials Registry (ReBEC) and ClinicalTrials.gov. The submitted manuscript must state the registration number.

Systematic reviews must also be registered in the Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) or a similar database. The submitted manuscript must also state the registration number.

ABD does not accept plagiarism or similar. The journal considers duplicate or fragmented publication of the same research an ethical violation, and it is careful in using mechanisms to find text similarities and detect plagiarism. To verify originality, before proceeding with peer review, the article will be checked by the originality detection service using the iThenticate software. Although editors make every effort to ensure the validity of published manuscripts, the final responsibility lies with the authors, not ABD, their editors, or reviewers, requiring retraction from the authors and withdrawing the article from the journal in case of subsequent confirmation of plagiarism.

Post-publication discussions and corrections are permitted through letters to the editor, allowing debate, correction, review, and retraction of articles after publication.

 

 

Aims and Scope

 

The journal is a bimonthly, peer-reviewed, open-access publication, printed in Portuguese and online in English, devoted to the dissemination of studies, evidence, and technical-scientific reports that are original and unpublished, results from research, reviews or communications about Dermatology and related fields. It focuses on Tropical Dermatology, Parasitic, and Infectious Dermatology, STDs/AIDS, and Dermopathology.

Editorial Policy

 

Preprints

 

The ABD journal accepts the submission of preprints.

Please note that preprints can be shared anywhere at any time by Elsevier's sharing policy.

Sharing your preprints (e.g., on a preprint server) will not count as pre-publication (for more information, see “Multiple, Redundant, or Concurrent Publications”).

A reliable preprint server needs to have a transparent moderation policy, offer DOI to submitted preprints, allow changes to the preprint version, permit community comments and evaluation with researcher endorsement, and facilitate interoperability with other services and platforms. Only submissions of works previously deposited on public server platforms that meet these characteristics of reliability and transparency will be accepted.

The public platforms Preprints, SciELO Preprints, and EmeRI are recommended for open discussion before approval and publication in the journal.

In the case of acceptance and publication of the article in ABD, it is the author's responsibility to update the record on the preprint server, informing the complete reference of the publication in the journal.

 

 

Peer review process

 

Pre-Analysis: All manuscripts submitted to ABD will be forwarded to the Editorial Board. It will be responsible for the analysis, verifying the adequacy of the publication's potential to the journal's scope. Manuscripts that meet all the requirements required by the journal will have a designated responsible editor and will proceed to technical evaluation. Those rejected in the initial phase are returned to the authors with the justification.

Technical assessment: Submitting an article implies that the work described has not been previously published (except in the form of an abstract, published lecture, or academic thesis). The journal uses the Crossref Similarity Check similarity detection service to check originality. At this stage, compliance with the publication and documentation standards required when submitting manuscripts by ABD is verified. In case of disagreement with the instructions, the manuscript returns to the authors for adjustment. Only after compliance with the required documentation will the manuscript be assigned to the reviewer member of the Board of Reviewers, who the editor responsible for the article will designate according to the main thematic area of the manuscript. 

Peer review: The journal uses double-blind review: the authors' identity will be hidden from the reviewers and vice versa. ABD asks the authors' to present identification data only on the title page, separately from the text of the manuscript, to facilitate the process. If there is anything in the text that identifies the institution or place, it must be replaced with XX until the end of the peer review. The opinions are assigned to the responsible editor, who will forward them to the authors if they agree with the evaluations. The manuscript returns to the responsible editor after the authors' corrections, and then the editor forwards it to the same reviewers, if necessary. This process is repeated until the reviewers and the responsible editor approve it.

Final decision: The editor will decide on the final approval of the manuscript.

 

 

Open data

 

ABDs encourage sharing data that supports research in an appropriate data repository, allowing its interconnection with published articles. If you share data, we suggest you cite it in the manuscript and list it in the references.

Research data are the results of observations or experiments that validate the research results.

The journal also encourages sharing your software, code, models, algorithms, protocols, methods, and other project-related materials to facilitate reproducibility and data reuse.

Fee Collection

 

There is no charge to authors for submission or processing of articles (APC).

Financial sustainability is the responsibility of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology.

 

 

Ethics and Misconduct Policy, Errata and Retraction

 

ABD adopts the principles of publication ethics included in the Code of Conduct of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). Ethical issues and/or topics that may harm the journal's reputation will be evaluated and addressed by the ABD editorial board and, if necessary, by the board of directors of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology.

In situations of misconduct, the journal will apply the retraction policy by the Good Practice Guide proposed by SciELO.

The Registration and Publication of Errata and Retraction will follow the recommendations proposed by SciELO.

 

 

Conflict of Interest Policy

 

Authors must inform about conflicts of interest of any nature (personal, academic, financial, commercial, or political) that could potentially interfere with the manuscript evaluation process.

Reviewers and editors implicated in the process must disclose in a statement whether or not there is a conflict of interest involved in evaluating and processing the article. If there is, even if potential, the conflict of interest must be informed in a specific document signed and attached to the processing process. This information will be published if the article is approved.

The journal requests all authors to complete the Conflicts of Interest Document and send it when submitting the manuscript. Furthermore, authors must list conflicts on the manuscript's title page when there are any. In case they do not exist, authors must state that there are no conflicts. This information is published alongside the article.

 

 

Adoption of similarity checking software

 

ABD uses the iThenticate similarity checking software from the CrossRef platform, available in the ABD Editorial Manager submission system by Elsevier.

Manuscripts are analyzed to verify similarity when they are submitted to the journal. The article may undergo a new similarity check when extensive modifications are made during the manuscript evaluation process.

 

 

Sex and Gender Issues

 

The ABD editorial team and the authors who publish must always observe the guidelines on Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER). The SAGER guidelines comprise a set of guidelines that guide the reporting of information about sex and gender in study design, data analysis, and results and interpretation of findings. Furthermore, ABD observes the gender equity policy in its editorial board.

 

 

Ethics Committee

 

Studies on patients or volunteers require informed consent and approval from the institution's or relevant research ethics committee (REC). The number of research approval protocols by the REC must be informed in the body of the article to be submitted.

Appropriate consents, permissions, and releases must be obtained whenever an author wishes to include case details, personal information, or images of patients or other individuals in the submitted manuscript.

 

 

Copyright, Intellectual Property and Terms of Use

 

The ABD adopts the CC-BY license of the Creative Commons System, under which the authors maintain the copyright on the article published in the ABD and the journal keeps the right of first publication. The adopted license allows access, printing, reading, distribution, remixing, adaptation, and development of other works with authorship recognition.

Submitted manuscripts must accompany the Copyright Assignment Term signed by the authors.

The concepts expressed in the articles are the exclusive responsibility of the authors.

All journal content and articles published by ABD, except where otherwise noted, are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution License.

The Brazilian Society of Dermatology finances the APC of all articles approved in the ABD. The permitted (re)use by third parties is defined by the Creative Commons license:

The Brazilian Society of Dermatology funds the open-access fee for the ABD journal.

ABD encourages authors to self-archive their accepted manuscripts, publishing them on personal blogs, institutional repositories, and academic social media, as well as posting them on their social media, as long as they include the full citation of the journal website version.

The journal Anais Brasileiros de Dermatologia (ABD) is composed of the following sections: Continuing Medical Education, Original Articles, Review, Letters - Tropical/ Infectious and Parasitic Dermatology, Letters - Dermatopathology, Letters - Therapy, Letters - Clinical Case, Letters - Investigation, and Correspondence.

Manuscripts must be sent via Elsevier's online submission system, following the instructions to authors, using Times New Roman font, size 12, in Portuguese or English.

 

CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION

  • Articles written by invitation.
  • Maximum 6,000 words, 12 illustrations, 100 references.

Author Contribution

 

Authors are required to mention each person's contribution on the title page based on the authorship declaration by the Contributor Roles Taxonomy (CRediT).

All authors must inform their substantial contribution on the Title Page with the following options: (1) study design and conception; (2) data collection, or analysis and interpretation of data; (3) statistical analysis; (4) writing of the article or critically review of important intellectual content; (5) data collection, analysis and interpretation; (6) effective participation in research orientation; (7) intellectual participation in propaedeutic and/or therapeutic conduct of studied cases; (8) critical literature review; (9) final approval of the final version of the manuscript.

 

 

Manuscript Preparation

 

The ABD advises authors to check the manuscript's compliance with the journal’s standards before submission so it follows the evaluation flow more quickly.

Manuscripts must be typed in Word, Times New Roman, size 12, double-spaced.

The manuscript must be structured according to the rules of each section of the journal.

Word count excludes titles, abstracts, keywords, tables, illustrations, and references in all file types.

 

 

Article Submission Format

 

Below is the checklist for submitting manuscripts to ABD journal.

 

TITLE PAGE:

  • Name of authors as it should appear in the publication.
  • Abbreviation of the names of each author according to the Vancouver rule.
  • Orcid of each author.
  • Affiliations of each author, WITHOUT their respective roles.
  • Inform the institution where the work was conducted, followed by city, state, and country.
  • Inform potential conflict of interests on the part of any author, if any.
  • Declare whether or not there was financial support.
  • Inform the corresponding author and email.
  • List the authorial contribution of each author (see items in Contributors in the Guidelines).

 

NUMBER OF AUTHORS BY ARTICLE TYPE:

  • Original Articles and Letters - Research: no limit of authors.
  • Continuing Medical Education, Review Articles, all Letters, except Investigation: maximum of 6 authors.
  • Correspondence: maximum of 4 authors.
  • Special Article: discussion and definition according to the type of article, upon invitation.

 

MANUSCRIPT:

  • Title;
  • Abstract (structured or not) and keywords, when requested;
  • Text:
- The text structure recommended for each type of article must be observed;
- Pay attention to the number of words in the text of each type of article. The count of the number of words in the text does not include abstract, keywords, references, and illustrations.
- Check whether all references and illustrations were cited in sequential numerical order in the text;
- Authors’ names and affiliations should not appear in the body of the text while the manuscript is undergoing peer review. This information must be replaced by XX. After the article is approved, include the data.
- Acknowledgements, if any, must appear at the end of the text and before the list of references.

 

  • References (Vancouver style) – see examples in the Guidelines.
  • List titles and captions of illustrations after listing bibliographic references.

Histopathological tests must always indicate at the end, in parentheses, the type of staining and the magnification.

  • Tables and flowcharts in Word can be inserted at the end of the manuscript. Do not send tables and flowcharts as images.

Images/photos must be attached separately.

    

ARTWORK:

  • The allowed format for sending images is PPT.
  • Images must be sent in their appropriate submission fields.
  • The minimum resolution of images allowed for publication is 500 dpi.

 

DOCUMENTATION:

  • Documents must be signed by all authors in a single file or individually and sent when submitting the manuscript.
  • Do not attach documentation as Supplementary Material.

 

REVISIONS:

  • Pay attention to the time limit for submitting the revised article.
  • Reviewers' questions or suggestions must be answered in a structured manner, question by question.

Image format

If the electronic artwork is created in a Microsoft Office application (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), upload the file in its original format.

Tables must be sent as Word files, using Times New Roman font, size 12, double space. Clinical images may be sent in PowerPoint format. 

Furthermore, images can be submitted as PDF, tiff, or jpeg, as long as the following resolutions are met:

EPS (or PDF): For vector drawings embed all fonts used.

TIFF (or JPEG): color or grayscale photographs (halftones) with at least 500 dpi.

TIFF (or JPEG): linear bitmap images (pure black and white pixels) with at least 1,000 dpi.

TIFF (or JPEG): bitmap line/halftone combinations (color or grayscale) with at least 500 dpi.
