The Reasons of Don Braulio, or the Venezuelan Popular Royalism as a Problem

Abstract

This article presents some historical and historiographical problems posed by Venezuelan popular royalism. Based on the idea that this movement of critical importance in the Venezuelan nation-state’s construction, because of the challenges that it posed for republicans as well as the social phenomena that it involved, this paper highlights the lack of studies about this issue and offers some alternative approaches to it. The autobiography of a royalist soldier, Braulio Fernández, is analyzed to identify some features of popular royalism, that can guide further research.
