From the Square to the Parchment: The Sermones In circulum anni de Sovramonte de Varese, Omin, in Franciscan Lombardy

The paper introduces a short and almost unknown collection of sermons coming from Northern Italy. They were written by a Franciscan friar called Sovramonte da Varese (Supermons de Varisio) about in the middle of the 13th century. They are useful to understand dynamics connecting the oral exhibition of the sermon and the writing of it. After a detailed reconstruction of Sovramonte's biography, the article goes on presenting the collection and two themes: usury and heresy. Both of them allow us to reconstruct the action of the friar in an urban context, which is supposed to be Milan. The author tries also to introduce the question about the connexion with contemporary works, such as Philip the Chancelor's sermons and Saint Anthony of Padua's ones, to enlighten the passages that should have subtended to all Sovramonte's work: reading, preaching, writing.

- Supermons de Varisio; medieval sermons; preaching; franciscan order; usury; heresy.
