The use of public open space: effects of local and configurational characteristics

Abstract

The objective of this paper is to deepen the existing knowledge about the relationship between the intensities and types of uses of public open spaces, the configurational characteristics, specifically, levels of integration, and the local attributes, namely, levels of visual and physical permeability, especially in the ground floors of buildings. Also part of the objectives is the comparison of the magnitude, through quantification, of the effects generated by local and configurational characteristics on urban vitality through the different uses of public open spaces. As a case study, 15 blocks located on more integrated and on more segregated streets in the central area of the coastal city of Capão da Canoa were selected. Data collection was carried out through the physical survey of the physical and visual connections of the ground floor interfaces of the buildings located in the selected blocks, in addition to carrying out behavioral observations. The results reveal, for example, that higher levels of physical connection (above 10 doors/100 meters of street) and visual connection (permeability above 66.6%) of the ground floor interfaces, added to the existence of balconies between the second and fourth pavement, contribute to greater movement and permanence of people in public open space, regardless of whether the block is located on streets with higher or lower spatial integration.
