"Minha Casa, Minha Vida" Program at the Metropolitan Region of Natal: a sociospatial analysis of the impact of the segregation and deterritorialization

This study analyses the impact of housing production on the spatial reconfiguration of cities in Brazil, focusing on the the development of "Minha Casa, Minha Vida" Program (PMCMV), which aims at benefitting the population in the income range from 0 to 3 minimum wages, built in the Metropolitan Region of Natal (MRN). From the evidence that the building of PMCMV estates has taken place in locations distant from the urban area, with little or no public transport provision and social facilities, this research sought to investigate the construction of these condos and how this has promoted social segregation of beneficiary population, directly impacting on their daily lives, in the way that Haesbaert defines deterritorialization. We visited 32 projects in 8 (out of 11) different municipalities of the RMN, characterizing its location and urban integration, the bulk of public and private services and infrastructure, which are crucial to establish a segregated pattern of occupation, implying in people’s daily lives in the form of deterritorialization.
