Urban lexicon and public arenas: Observing times and spaces in the city center of Fortaleza

Abstract

This article refers to classifications, representations and proposals of urban intervention as relevant subjects for analyzing the city as both practice and language. The central area of the city of Fortaleza, in Brazil, provides the empirical support for this issue, being an exemplary site to activate classifications, reforms and interventions made at different times. Based on the methodological contribution of rhythmanalysis, by Henri Lefebvre, the research records the various movements, both slow and intense, that permeate everyday social relations in the city center. These include the perceptions and classifications of the actors and spokespersons who contribute to compose an urban lexicon, activated particularly through public arenas, which may be further enhanced under certain social conjunctures.
