Teachers of english to young learners: expected theoretical and methodological knowledge

The interest for the domain of the English Language (EL) to young learners is increasing. It is considered a communication tool for inclusion in a globalized world (CAMERON, 2001; PINTER, 2006). The article aims at discussing the development of teachers for this specific context. Some suggestions of changes in the current process are mentioned, so that it meets the contemporary needs (SACRISTÁN, 2006; LIBÂNEO, 2006). They show points of view of five teachers that teach EL for children in a city in Mato Grosso State. The data are part of a qualitative study and to collect them, individual interviews and collective reflexive sessions were used with the teachers' group and the researcher. Based on what these teachers stated, we present some theoretical- methodological information acquired by them and the ones aimed as well as some peculiar characteristics required to teach children (SPADA, 2004). Some difficulties and the importance of the experience to development the teaching practice are also underlined. The formation is understood as continuous with collective, collaborative and reflective character (PORTO, 2004; IMBERNÓN, 2005; PIMENTA e GHEDIN, 2005). That kind of formation gives the opportunity to teachers to develop an investigative action in their pedagogical practice.
