Non-standard Brazilian portuguese: between mothers and professors of Letras

In this text, we refer to a study in which we heard professors of Letras concerning the meanings they produce in their discourses about forms of non-standard Brazilian Portuguese as they interact with their students and persons of their family mainly their children, that is, when they educate either in or out of school respectively. Our interest departs from the heretic rupture carved by Sociolinguistics when it embraces the viewpoint that heterogeneity, variation and change constitute the essence of every language against the principles of homogeneity, uniformity and conservation cultivated by the long-lived grammar tradition and naturalized by common sense. In view of their vast familiarity with the meanings engendered in the universe of Linguistics, professors of Letters allegedly should figure in the social communities to which they belong as vectors of transformation of public opinion and of their social discourses about all forms of linguistic differences. What gestures of interpretation regarding the varieties of Brazilian Portuguese do these women as professors of Letters and mothers nurture between their students and their own children? What relations are set up between the Discourse of the One and the Discourse of the Many in practices of linguistic education lived by mothers/professors of Letters?
