Abstract:
In the Rio de Janeiro suburbs, from the beginning of the twentieth century, sporting initiatives were progressively better structured, including those more related to the middle and upper classes. This article aims to discuss an experience with rowing promoted by a suburban area association founded in 1915, the Olaria Futebol Clube, renamed, in 1920, Olaria Atlético Clube. What motivations led to this decision and encouraged some members to dedicate themselves to the practice of rowing? What strategies were used to implement it? What representations have been forged around rowing? As sources, it was used newspapers and magazines. Perceiving the sport involvement as an indicator of the action of different social groups in the urban scene, it is concluded that rowing was part of a strategy in order to consolidate a good reputation for the club, its recognition in the neighborhood, in the suburbs and in the city.
