This historical-social mark study has as objective to describe the Nursing Service memory of University Hospital of Santa Maria, of the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria RS, in the period of 1959 to 2003. As primary founts, consulted documents and nurses' oral depositions that participated of this trajectory; like secondary founts utilized goods and books about the thematic. The results show that Hospital, since your creation suffered several alterations in virtue of your work mission and the contextual conditions. They were countless the administrative problems faced by the nursing professionals. In discoveries sight, it became evident the fact that the assistance rationality discussion, the working conditions and the possible professional autonomy represents an important advance to the comprehension of the present as to the projection of the future of the Nursing Service of the Hospital.
