Patient and family reception in coronary care unit

This study involves qualitative research, carried out in April and May of 2006 in a coronary care unit of a public hospital specialized in cardiology, located in Southern Brazil. It aimed at developing a program for implanting light technology (reception) in patient/family care involving acute myocardial infarction clinical diagnosis, based on the perception of the patient/family that experienced institutionalization in the coronary care Unit. The participants were nine patients/families. Interviews were given and systematic observation was used in order to collect the data. The data analysis was based on content analysis. The results highlight two categories: patient's/family's perceptions of the infarction; and technology and care. These categories favor the development of a proposal to use light technology in patient/family care. For the effective use of this technology, the commitment of all those involved in health care is primordial, not as something which is tight, but that which can be produced from this technology.
