The meaning of care in the context of complex thinking: new possibilities for nursing

The objective of this study is to reflect upon the meaning of care given the light of complex thinking, evidencing points that can anchor a theoretical conception as well as a practice more adhering to the necessities currently placed before Nursing. Thus, a brief account of complex thinking is given as well as historical-conceptual questions related to the conception of care, with the intention of producing reflections that may contribute to the construction of a new matrix of significances for the Nursing care. Contrary to fragmented and unilateral thinking, which teaches us to isolate, simplify, and reduce, complex thinking is a more interactive manner of approaching reality. This reflection reveals the effort of bringing the possibility of illuminating new paths that make clear the different significances of care to the Nursing practice, as a discipline and profession. These different significances show the need to relate knowledge and contexts, as well as to value the singularity of each human being and situation.
