New paradigms of organization and financing are being introduced into the area of Brazilian scientific and technological research, successfully overcoming systemic deficiencies. Fapesp, an innovative foundation whose mission is to encourage research, was founded within this context. This article examines Fapesp's institutional development, highlighting some of the major projects in its recent history.
