Until recently, the only Asian country with which Brazil had any significant relations was Japan. Only in the 1990´s was this scope widened to include South Korea, Southeast Asia and China. Up until now, the relationship between Brazil and the Asian blocks has been limited to Mercosul´s overtures to Asean. This relationship is currently gaining in political intensity through the institutionalization of the relationship between Asia and Latin America, through Focalal.
