Memory, narrative and ethnic subjectivity: the European ethnicity in the United States

Abstract

This text reviews the book “Ethnic subjectivity in intergenerational memory narratives: politics of the untold”, by Mónika Fodor (2020). Over six chapters, the work presents an analysis of narratives of intergenerational memory and their role in the construction of ethnic subjectivity. Fodor’s work acquires originality and relevance due to the emphasis on the subjective aspect and the “investment” dimension of ethnicity, understood as symbolic capital. The analysis carried out by the author, circumscribed to ethnicity of European origin in the context of the United States, presents useful methodological indications and heuristic potential, which may contribute to the analysis of ethnicity and memory phenomena in different historical and empirical contexts marked by migratory experience.
