Image metamorphoses in the social sciences: three experiences with ethnographic film

Abstract

I describe here three ethnographic experiences carried out in different contexts, with the objective of thinking about three different image regimes that are configured when social forms exert their influences on the aesthetic forms elaborated in the field of ethnographic film. In the first case, a research on work in the context of deindustrialization produces an ethnographic film about 2800 layoffs; in the second, the investigation of the ways of life of precarious working classes culminates in a cartography of their networks of relationships; in the third, the ethnography of the struggle for land among the Guarani peoples reveals other subjects of political agency. In all these processes, apprehending the views of the studied subjects configures the possibility of anthropological understanding.
