The rises of the economy of enrichment and of the extreme right: an interview with Luc Boltanski and Arnaud Esquerre

Abstract

In this interview with Luc Boltanski and Arnaud Esquerre, we shall approach the last two oeuvres that they wrote together, namely Vers l’Extrême and Enrichissement. Held during the 19th Congress of the Brazilian Sociological Society, in 2019, the interview begins by discussing the preparation of Enrichissement, highlighting how their authors gradually conceived the so-called “economies of enrichment” as object, as well as the methodological challenges that had to be faced in doing so. Following that, the authors are asked about changes and permanencies that this oeuvre establishes in relation to their previous works, given the historical transformations analyzed in The new spirit of capitalism and the discussion about relationships between sociology and social critique forged in De la critique. Finally, the interview moves towards imbrications between the new patrimonial class - formed within the economy of enrichment - and the political conservatism emerging from the extreme right and its growing electoral success.
