Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) pandemic and women: effects on working conditions and health

ABSTRACT

The study aimed to discuss the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, caused by the new coronavirus (2019-nCoV), specifically on women’s work and health conditions, with a focus on gender dynamics. The discussion was based on women health and epidemics literature, data about the condition of women during the Covid-19 pandemic, in 2020, especially in Brazil, but also in other countries with different socioeconomic characteristics. The analysis exposed three central aspects in which the Covid-19 pandemic affects women’s health: the exposure of care professionals, health workers, and domestic workers; reproductive rights; and domestic violence. The work contributed to understand the ways in which epidemics can expose the health of women, whether in precarious working conditions, in the suspension of their rights in health care, or in the increase of violence in the context of social isolation.
