Covid-19 impacts in the light of social difference markers: race, gender, and social class

ABSTRACT

The objective was to discuss the impacts of Covid-19 on population groups, considering vulner- abilities in light of gender, race, and social class. This is an exploratory study, with an integrative literature review, from the perspective of the referred social markers, which can influence to the prognosis of Covid-19. A total of 1.343 publications were identified in the databases of the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), the Virtual Health Library (VHL), and the Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (Lilacs). However, according to the established criteria, eight publications were included. The referred social markers presented as factors/aspects that make the impacts of Covid-19 in several international, national, or regional scenarios, given the limited operational resources for health, employment, education, and housing. In this context, the historical need to implement strategies for the democratization of opportunities emerges not only in the pandemic period, but especially in the post-pandemic period. Therefore, it is necessary to adopt socioeconomic policies of greater impact and coverage in the daily lives of the population, with the aim of strengthening autonomy, citizenship, and the right to life in the face of old and new forms of social exclusion.
