Citotoxicity analysis of bioceramics for use in systems of implantations

The objective of this work was the cytotoxicity characterization of ceramic materials that can present biocompatibility and thus to be used as component in implantations systems. Samples based on ZrO2, ZrO2-Al2O3, Si3N4 with AlN/Tr2O3 were submitted the "in vitro" cytotoxicity tests for preliminary biological evaluation. In the tests, extracts of the materials were used to be tested in contact with a mammalian cell culture (NCTC-clone L929 cell line) as positive (phenol solution) and negative (no toxic PVC pellets) extracts controls. The cytotoxicity evaluation was carried through using the neutral red uptake methodology. The obtained results showed that the analyzed materials independent of sample composition or sintering time did not present cytotoxic character. So, these materials are strong candidates to be applied in implantation systems.
