Subtle intervention: psychoanalytic follow-up of parents and premature babies

Resumos

Brazil features a high number of premature births and although the technologies of the Neonatal Intensive Care Units (USINs) increase their survival, losses occur as well. In addition to the urgency of the body, there is also a subjective factor, as the babies are separated from their parents, handled, and subjected to painful procedures, lacking representations. This article describes a psychoanalytic follow-up involving four extremely premature and very premature babies and their parents to favor their psychic constitution from their admission to the USIN to 12 months of age. A qualitative study of multiple cases and a synthesis of crossed cases were performed using Clinical Child Development Risk Indicators (IRDIs). We highlight the emergence of fundamental operations for the constitution of the psyche and the potential of psychoanalytic monitoring in the promotion and prevention of mental health.
