Celso Furtado, critic of "coloniality"

Abstract

Questioning some narratives about the pioneering spirit and conceptual innovations of the Modernity/Coloniality group, the aim of this article is to discuss some of Celso Furtado's theoretical formulations that are close to what is currently understood in Latin American social sciences as an analysis of "coloniality" and that predate the group's work. Discussing the theory of dependency developed by the author in the 1970s, we examine its elements of criticism of Eurocentrism, instrumental rationality, the modern ideology of progress and the ways of life associated with industrial civilization.
