Colonial violations and the rights claims of indigenous peoples: experiences in the Indigenous Land Mangueirinha

Abstract

This article presents an analysis of how colonialism perpetuated and continues to produce violence against indigenous people and their bodies-territories. The reflections presented are the result of field research carried out since 2018, in the Indigenous Land Mangueirinha (Paraná). The decolonial perspective is the basis of the analysis, through which the legal rights conquered by indigenous peoples are examined and reflections are provided on the limits for their effective recognition. In addition, the history of Kaingang struggles for the resumption of the territory of the Indigenous Land Mangueirinha is presented, in opposition to the colonial violence that were operated on them. Finally, it reports a demand presented by indigenous women claiming the right to circulate freely in public spaces in cities.
