Brazilian architecture: tradition and utopia

ABSTRACT

The article establishes a relationship between 1920’s Brazilian artistic modernism and modern Brazilian architecture. The appropriation of external references and it’s synthesis with native elements proposed by Oswald de Andrade unfolds in coping with prevailing cultural interdiction, prevalent since the XIX century, specially racial miscegenation, tropical nature and naive culture. The exuberant nature and popular culture, defining elements of its society, become the foundation of a branch of modern Brazilian architecture.
