“Forget Williams?”: cultural materialism, structures of feeling and popular music researches in Brazil

ABSTRACT

Developed by Raymond Williams, the cultural hypothesis of structures of feeling has been increasingly referenced by Brazilian researchers, in particular - what matters to this paper - by historians and sociologists of recorded popular music. From impressions collected in our academic trajectory, we notice, however, certain disconnect between this notion and the cultural materialism conceived and defended by the author. At first, we elucidate fundamental questions that guided Williams’ critical debate with the cultural studies of the Marxist tradition in his time, and then, we discuss the theoretical and methodological potential of his reflections for research in popular music.
