Parque da Juventude in São Paulo as a cultural text: between forgetfulness and memories

ABSTRACT

The Parque da Juventude, following the implosion of the Carandiru Penitentiary Complex, is examined as a cultural text and a site of remembrance. The objective is to critically examine the construction of memories associated with the Carandiru Complex and the strategies of forgetting that manifest within the Park. This analysis is grounded in the semiotic theory of culture, drawing upon research on social memory and the concept of flânerie. The expectation is to illustrate that within the Parque da Juventude there are conflicts between memories and forgetting materialized in cultural texts.
