António Hespanha and the eve of digital humanities

ABSTRACT

Throughout his career as a historian, António Hespanha cultivated innovative methodological approaches with a permanent demand for acuity in the choice and exploitation of historical sources. A relevant part of his pioneering work is linked to the constant attention to what information technologies and digital tools could bring to the historiographical work, not only as analytical tools but also as powerful instruments for dissemination and accessibility, on a large scale, of data and critical work. This text, making a brief overview of António Hespanha’s work with strong investment in technological resources, seeks to demonstrate his pioneering role in the application and dissemination of what is now known as digital humanities.
