URBANISM AND EDUCATION: MODERN IDEAS IN NATIONAL ENGINEERING. RIO DE JANEIRO, EARLY YEARS OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY1

Abstract

In this article, I will discuss the ways in which frames of reference belonging to modern urbanism and education were mobilized in projects / projections for the city of Rio de Janeiro in the 1920s, thanks to the examination of intellectual productions by engineers who acted as founding members of the Brazilian Association of Education (ABE), paying attention to the work of Heitor Lyra da Silva and Everardo Backheuser. By giving visibility to the presence of engineers in educa tional discussions, the present work unveils the relevance acquired, in the broad and complex process of reorganization of Brazilian society, by educational ideas embedded in these professionals’ thoughts and practices. This evidence appears inseparable from the urban ideas that underpinned (designed or actual) transformations in the city of Rio de Janeiro, then capital of the Republic..
