“IT IS TIME FOR THE PRESS TO INTRODUCE US”: WOMEN AND PROFESSIONAL OBSTACLES IN JOURNALISM, RIO DE JANEIRO, 19TH CENTURY

Abstract

The article aims to discuss the professional labors of women in the 19th century press in Rio de Janeiro, especially the case of Júlia de Albuquerque Sandy Aguiar. Within feminist epistemologies, we seek to list the constitution of inequalities and hierarchies that excluded women from equal access to the printed universe, that is, workers of the personal staff of newspapers and with adequate remuneration. As in the middle of the century this was impossible, the exit found was the creation of their own newspapers, in which themes related to their claims emerge as central, followed by a search for adequate valuation and remuneration. We use as source the newspaper Bello Sexo, published in 1862, to guide our conclusions, since it is possible to note a number of issues related to the difficulties in the journalistic work for women.
