THE ANTI-ALCOHOL CAMPAIGN OF THE BRAZILIAN LEAGUE OF MENTAL HYGIENE

Abstract

Created in 1923, in Rio de Janeiro, the Brazilian League of Mental Hygiene was a significant nationwide association composed of doctors dedicated to addressing various subjects, such as race, mental illness, motherhood, eugenics, alcoholism, etc. Their opinions and positions were developed through meetings, conferences, and publications in the national press - especially the Brazilian Archives of Mental Hygiene, its official journal. A key topic discussed among its members was alcohol and alcoholism, which had a specific session in the official periodical. This article reflects on the League’s position on the subject by analyzing the texts published in the Brazilian Archives.
