THE ANTHROPOPHAGIC EXPERIENCE OF MODERNIST CARICATURE (1903-1929)

Abstract

When the Brazilian caricature´s production went through a broad modernization process, experienced, at the beginning of the 20 th century, a period of profound technical, aesthetic and structural transformations, when it was no longer a craft and became a business production. In the last thirty years, the historiography related to caricature reshaped the Modernism concept, when it highlighted artistic expressions that forged a modernist and urban popular culture. The objective of this article is to discuss the diversity of modernist expressions of Brazilian satirical illustration, from a selection of humorous drawings published in popular magazines such as Para Todos (1918-1958), Fon-Fon (1907-1958), O Malho (1902-1952), and Careta (1908-1960) analysis. We try to analyze the selected material, observing thematic and aesthetic aspects, seeking to understand how they anticipated some values that would prevail from the movement that emerged in the Modern Art Week of 1922.
