BOTANY AT THE PAULISTA MUSEUM (1895-1927)

Abstract

In this article, we seek to understand how Museu Paulista established an area of botanic st udy and research f rom 1895 to 1927. The focus is on the constitution of the Botany Section and highlights personal and institutional network relationships for garden collection formation and maintenance. The analysis was made on institutional history and scientific practices and allowed a look at the museum’s daily work, particularly botanic practices. The study resizes the space dedicated to botany at the Museu Paulista. It shows how, over the years, various actions have sometimes promoted and sometimes suppressed the studies of flora in an institution undergoing transformations and redefining its purposes.
