THE MODERNIZATION OF PERMANENCE AND THE CHANGES IN LATIN AMERICAN AGRICULTURE DURING COLD WAR: A STUDY BY THE ACTION OF THE USA IN THE ORGANIZATION OF EMPRESA BRASILEIRA DE PESQUISA AGROPECUÁRIA (1973-1979)

Abstract

Agriculture research has become a fundamental piece of Latin America’s development model adopted in the 20th century. To attend this demand, we percept the beginning of agriculture research institutes development as a method to give the necessary support to agricultural field. There was an intensification of this process in the 1940s, mainly about the role that science and technology played on Second World War. Taking the Brazilian situation, we can see the materialization of this process through Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária (Embrapa) foundation in the 1970s. This article’s main objective is to analysis this institution foundation in the context of the transformation passed by global crop production through modifications provided by science and technology, which was characterized by the Green Revolution, seeking to understand and analyze the EUA intervention in the institutional formation process.
