Women interned due to aggression at an emergency hospital: (in)visibility of violence

It is a cross-sectional study with the objective of characterize the hospitalization of female victims of aggression at Hospital de Pronto Socorro de Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, over the year 2005. The data collection was done at the records of women above 18 years old who were victims of aggression. By utilizing the Epi-Info Software, the analysis was performed by establishing the categories of the events and crossing descriptive variables and absolute and relative frequency indexes. Over the studied time frame, 73 women, victims of aggression, entered the hospital, being 49,3% of age between 18 and 29 while 41,1% were offended with firearm and 37% with white weapon. In most of the records the data were incomplete or they lacked registrations at all, an indication that many cases of aggression were not identified during the hospitalization time and that the treatment was restricted to physical lesions.
