Profile of the organic farmers an the ways of evaluating organic conformity in the state of São Paulo

Abstract:

The objective of the present research was to identify the profile of organic producers in the state of São Paulo, analyzing the spatial distribution, the organic conformity assessment system adopted, and the production diversity. A documental research with a qualitative approach was carried out. The document analyzed was the National Register of Organic Producers (CNPO) and, for data organization, it was used as reference the distribution per mesoregion established by the IBGE, which in the state are 15. There are organic producers in 97.7% of the municipalities. 61.5% of the producers adopt auditing in the evaluation of organic conformity. The majority of organic producers are men and over 41 years old. As a conclusion, we have that organic agriculture in the state of São Paulo is concentrated in certain regions, especially those where family agriculture is predominant. In regions with a strong presence of agribusiness production clusters, such as sugar cane, there are fewer organic producers. Even though there are different rates of occurrence, organic agriculture is present throughout the São Paulo territory, which indicates its growth potential in the state.
