Multilateralism, Migration and Human Rights: Before and after the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration

Abstract

For decades, the United Nations and its Member States refrained from addressing migration through a multilateral approach. Initial attempts occurred at the beginning of this Century and became more significant in the last few years. The Global Compact for a Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration represents a milestone in this regard. Its implementation will be key to consolidate a multilateral approach to migration and enhance the protection of the human rights of migrants.
