Relationship between body fat and systolic and diastolic blood pressure in students between 14 and 17 years of age in Floriano-Piauí-Brazil

Cardiovascular diseases are associated with lifestyle. Thus, this study aimed to describe and analyze the association between body fat and systolic blood pressure among schoolchildren in the city of Floriano-PI. It can be characterized as an observational study of prevalence with a descriptive, cross-sectional design. The study population included adolescents aged between 14 and 17 years, of both sexes. We conducted a descriptive analysis of central tendency and dispersion, with one- and two-way analysis (significance level p<0.05). The confidence index was 95%. The main results show high rates of body fat (51.1%) and hypertension (18%) for the students, and a significantly positive association between systolic blood pressure and body fat among female students. It is concluded that Floriano students have risk factors for developing non-transmissible chronic diseases.
