ABSTRACT

The Public squares of Porto Alegre, in the second half of the 1920s, received improvements in infrastructure to create opportunities for practice sports. How did the spread of sports activities in the squares of Porto Alegre in the period between the decades from 1920 to 1940 is the central question of this study. The documentary analysis of printed sources revealed that the implementation of the Public Service Recreation (SRP) in 1926, was essential in the occupation of squares as spaces intended for sports practices. In addition to the practice were potentiated sports competitions in the squares, resulting in the formation of clubs in the decades 1930 and 1940.
