Gender Discourses in My Name is Ray: Deconstructing Identities, Binarisms and Hierarchies

Abstract:

In the present work, the authors propose a reading exercise of the movie My Name is Ray (Gaby Dellal, 2015), questioning the identity and relationship with the binarism and hierarchy placed in the sexuality/gender pair. The movie addresses the process of gender transition of adolescent Ray. Deconstruction is used as an analytical reference, as proposed by Jacques Derrida. It is the effort to problematize hegemonic modes of subjective production considering the reversal and displacement movements. The article aims to problematize the body and gender’s constitution as crossed by the dominant modes of subjectivation, and discusses the terms of identification available to those that escape the heteronormativity proposed by Butler. It is also emphasized the need for depathologization of trans identities regarding the publication of the most recent update of the CID-11.
