Mexico and gender violence: development studies and the journal Debate Feminista

Abstract:

This article is an itinerary of the routes of gender violence and development studies in Mexico, in the 1990s, the year in which the first issue of Debate Feminista appeared, a periodical publication on feminism and the gender perspective of the UNAM. We analyzed the context from two elements: the socio-cultural conditions and the definition of violence the journal has taken into consideration and contribution to a broader context of the academic, theoretical, and intellectual feminist discourse. Among the results, on the one hand, we understand that there are government policies to address the condition of violence suffered by women, but not actions that change their position within society; on the other hand, the position of the journal is intimately related to the historical context, showing the complexity of the problem.
