SUS AND THE GROWING COMMODIFICATION OF HEALTH SERVICES IN BRAZIL IN THE YEARS 2010S

ABSTRACT

This article investigates the advance of health commodification in Brazil. Despite the 1988 Brazilian Constitution instituting health as a social right and the State’s duty, financing the Unified Health System has never been sufficiently guaranteed. Underfunding has been constant in the Brazilian public health system, disproportionately affecting the different social classes. Beyond the commodification of a social right, an advance in the financialization in the Brazilian health sector is observed, with large health companies acting more actively in the capital market.
