The present study shows the dynamics of employment for the nursing profession in Brazil from 1970 up to 1990. It outlines the main characteristics and trends of this labor market before and after the implantation of the Sistema Único de Saúde-SUS (Federal Health Care System). The main source of information for this investigation was data published in the research Medical-Sanitary Assistance carried out by IBGE (Brazilian Geography and Statistics Institute).
