Dentofacial deformities: orofacial myofunctional characteristics

Abstract:

PURPOSE:

to analyze and describe the performance of the stomatognathic functions according to the different types of DFD.

METHODS:

this descriptive, analytical and transversal study comprised 50 patients with DFD. The control group consisted of 46 healthy individuals. Data collection occurred between the months of July and September 2013, and the orofacial myofunctional analysis was performed by the application of the MBGR (Marchesan, Berrentin-Felix, Genaro, Rehder) protocol. The statistical protocol was based on descriptive data analysis.

RESULTS:

all DFDs studied had some change in the implementation of the stomatognathic functions and these changes varied according to the type of DFD.

CONCLUSION:

different types of DFD are related to changes detected in the performance of the stomatognathic functions.
