Characterizing the population with mouth and orofaringe cancer, attended in the sector of head and neck in a referral hospital in Salvador City - BA

PURPOSE: to characterize the patients with oral cavity and oropharynx cancer, attended at the Head and Neck Ambulatory of Aristides Maltez Hospital in Salvador - BA, from June to December, 2007. METHODS: a retrospective study was carried through using the analysis of medical records of patients with oral cavity and oropharynx cancer, within six months, at Aristides Maltez Hospital. Information about age, gender, location, clinical staging, surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, presence of probe, tracheotomy, routing and speech pathologist disturbance were statistically analyzed by two equal proportion ANOVA test, and Chi-square test for independence. RESULTS: the incidence of male-female patients with squamous cell carcinoma in oral cavity was 2.5: 1, age ranged from 19 to 95 years (median 58). The most affected spots were tongue (29.2%) followed by flooring (21.2%). For the oropharynx, the male-female ratio was 1.95:1, aging from 34 to 93 years (median 59). The most affected spot was tonsils (29.2%). The therapeutic procedures applied were: absence of treatment, combination of radiotherapy and chemotherapy and the use of a probe. Regarding to the distribution by stage, the fourth one prevailed, then they were directed to speech pathologist treatment. 89.9% of patients had speech pathologist disturbance, prevailing dysphagia. CONCLUSION: this survey helped to characterize the profile of patients taken care at Aristides Maltez Hospital, and with programs for prevention of this disease.
