Influence of smoking habit, obesity, age and gender on the pulmonary function of patients submitted to laparoscopic cholecystectomy

This study was designed to evaluate the influence of the smoking habit, obesity, age and gender on lhe pulmonary function of patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC). Prospective evaluation of lhe respiratory function of patients referred for elective LC was performed by means of simple spirometry on lhe preoperative period, oh lhe first and seventh postoperative days (POD). Forty-eight patients were evaluated and distributed intofollowing groups: elderly vs young; obese vs nonobeses; smokers vs non -smokers; women vs men. The values ofFVC, FEV I' FEF 25 and FEF 5()' in lhe first POD were significantly lower than in the preoperative period, except for the FEF 25 in lhe subgroup of obese patients, which showed a restrictive pattem of pulmonary function. No dijferences were observed between variations in lhe spirometric measurements ofpatients, regarding lhe parameters under study. Smoking, obesity, advanced age and gender did not injluence, whether in association or not, spirometric measurements in lhe preoperative period and on lhe first and seventh days after laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
